Tips Home - Debunking Security Systems Myths |
| |
Most people know the importance of security systems, yet there are many homes nowadays that are still unprotected by one. Since securing a home with even a basic alarm system is considered quite affordable, it is safe to say that price may not be a determining factor in all homes that do not have an alarm system installed in them.
What can be determined is that over the years, as security systems have grown more popular, there has been a lot of information circulating about them. While most information is correct and informative, some of it is not.
Here are some solid facts that can help dispel many of the common myths or misconceptions surrounding security systems.
You need a phone line in your home to have a monitored security system.
Not anymore. Security systems no longer need an active phone line in a home in order to be monitored. Thanks to cellular technology, a home alarm can be monitored completely wirelessly via a cellular link.
Only professionals can install an alarm system.
While it is certainly recommended that you have a licensed installer from a reputable security company handle the installation of your alarm system, it is not necessary. In fact, over the past few years, DIY security systems have become quite popular. Many of these systems are wireless and come ready to install—right out of the box. Self-installation isn't for everyone though. Therefore, if you do not feel comfortable installing your own alarm system, leave it to the professionals to do.
Burglars can defeat an alarm system during a power outage.
All security systems should have a back-up battery installed in them. A back-up battery is designed to kick in the moment an alarm system loses power so that a home never goes unprotected. Depending on the system battery used in your installation, along with other factors, this back-up coverage can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
You can't have motion detectors installed in your home if you have a dog or cat.
As technology has improved, so has the reliability of many of the alarm devices used on today’s security systems, motion detectors in particular. If pet immune motion detectors are installed correctly in a home with pets, even multiple pets, the odds of those motion detectors false alarming are highly unlikely.
You cannot have a security system installed and monitored if you rent a home or an apartment.
In the past, if you were a renter and wanted an alarm system installed and monitored, you would've had a hard time finding an alarm company willing to work with you. These days, plenty of alarm companies, including many of the larger companies like ADT, offer security systems and services exclusively with renters in mind.
